How to use it in a case
Assess each application and classify into one of 6 Rs. Start with business criticality, technical complexity, dependencies, compliance needs, and cost impact. Use matrix: business value vs technical health.
- Retire. Decommission or turn off applications that are no longer needed
- Retain. Keep applications on-premises due to licensing, architecture, or regulatory constraints
- Rehost. Lift and shift - move to cloud with minimal changes (fastest, lowest effort)
- Replatform. Make some optimizations (e.g., RDS for database) without full refactor
- Refactor. Redesign and rearchitect for cloud-native benefits (microservices, containers)
- Repurchase. Replace with SaaS alternatives (e.g., Salesforce instead of on-prem CRM)
